From my personal perspective I would definitely answer with a YES. Visiting Burma is definitely a great travel experience. Taking local transport can make a difficult travel; you may transfer from bus or van to a private taxi if you are getting older and your body needs an extra piece of comfort; you may also stay off the beaten track if the military role let you go into it.

It is hot and rainy in August in Burma; buses are mostly crowded... reaching your next destination will be always a balanced question of patience and hours, but the local people met along the road will make the journey a really friendly experience. Not many of them can speak English, but their mood is really cool. You may also buy an air ticket; every cash you spend on it, is worth enough if you are in the need of saving some extra time; if you are late, very late, 4 days late, then you will need to take a flight; I know it pretty well --)).

Traveling by plane is a also a nice experience if the monsoon is treating you well and does not make you "jumping" too much into its turbulences. That was our experience, a really appreciated touch of luck for some of my trip partners not very excited with these kind of emotions...
